| Portrait - Marilyn Monroe |
Step 02
|
This is the first color in a process called underpainting. Using a fleshtone, I begin building the shape of the face, following the photograph closely. This step allows for the roughing out of areas where the drawing of lines would not work. Since this is a light color, darker and lighter colors can be used in later steps to adjust placement and intensity.
Follow the sketch closely, but also keep a close eye on the original photograph. I have often discovered discrepancies between the two. Sometimes major mistakes can be avoided. Always trust the original over the sketch: remember, it its the original you are painting, not the sketch.
