Blue is now used to darken shadows further. Like red, it would be best to thin this color down with water or colorless extender to prevent accidentally building the color up too far.
The blue is used on ALL shadows; clothing, face, hair, etc. Not only does the blending of the blue with the existing colors give a more natural dark, it also cools down shadow areas, enhancing the illusion of depth.
The dark color achieved with this step is the darkest color of most of the painting, so detail is important.
